The tragic news was shared by his grieving mother, Shelly Sykes, who revealed on social media that her 32-year-old son lost his life on January 8 when fire engulfed their Mount Malibu TV Studio estate.

A Remarkable Life Cut Short

“He overcame so much with surgeries and therapies to regain his sight and to be able to learn how to walk,” Dr. Shelly Sykes wrote in a deeply emotional post on X (formerly Twitter). Rory was born blind and with cerebral palsy but went on to lead a life of courage and determination.

Dr. Sykes’ heartbreaking announcement detailed Rory’s remarkable journey, from battling significant health challenges at birth to achieving incredible personal milestones, such as hosting the British RTV show Kiddy Kapers and performing Singing in the Rain at the Sydney Opera House.

A Mother’s Harrowing Fight to Save Her Son

Dr. Sykes, originally from the UK but now based in Australia, recounted the terrifying events leading up to Rory’s death. She explained that the local water company, Las Virgenes Municipal Water, had allegedly “switched off” the water supply during the blaze, leaving her and local firefighters powerless to combat the flames.

“I couldn’t put out the cinders on his roof with a hose because the water was switched off,” Dr. Sykes wrote. “Even the 50 brave firefighters had no water all day! He will be incredibly missed.”

Desperate to save her son, she made repeated attempts to call emergency services but found the lines unresponsive. Leaving Rory in their self-contained cottage, she drove to the nearest fire station for help.

“When the fire department brought me back, his cottage was burnt to the ground,” she told reporters, fighting back tears.

Rory’s remains have yet to be recovered, and his death has not been officially added to the wildfire death toll.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Born in West Yorkshire, UK, and raised in New South Wales, Australia, Rory Sykes defied his early health challenges to lead an extraordinary life. He excelled in academics, attending St. Mary’s Cathedral College and Sydney Distance Education High School. Beyond his childhood fame, Rory became an online gamer, philanthropist, and public speaker.

In 2005, Rory co-founded the Happy Charity with his mother, raising significant funds for children battling illnesses worldwide.

Wildfires Leave a Trail of Devastation

Rory’s tragic death is one among many losses in the wake of the catastrophic Los Angeles wildfires. According to Sky News, at least 11 people have lost their lives, and over 10,000 structures have been destroyed. Authorities estimate damages exceeding $135 billion, with more than 180,000 residents evacuated.

The Palisades Fire, fueled by winds reaching up to 160 km/hour, has devastated neighborhoods, including Mount Malibu. As emergency services continue to battle multiple fires, the death toll is expected to rise.

A Mother’s Heartbreak

Dr. Shelly Sykes spoke about the unimaginable loss of her son. “My heart is broken,” she said, describing Rory as a “wonderful son” and a “gift born on mine and his grandma’s birthday.”

Despite her loss, Dr. Sykes expressed gratitude for the support she’s received and urged people to continue aiding relief efforts. A spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed they are providing consular assistance to the family.

A Call for Support

While private organizations predict damages will run into tens of billions, support continues to pour in from around the globe. The Walt Disney Co. has pledged $15 million to aid relief and rebuilding efforts, and World Central Kitchen is providing meals to displaced families and emergency responders.
