Exciting news from SANParks regarding the lion we helped locate and recover using our advanced drone technology! This incredible story, originally published by Lowvelder, details the remarkable journey of Mbombela’s infamous rogue lion and its successful reintegration into the Kruger National Park.

From Rogue Wanderer to Thriving in Kruger

Mbombela’s mysterious lion has finally found its forever home. To the surprise of conservationists, this majestic predator has formed a coalition with three other lions in the Kruger National Park. Even more astonishing, DNA tests confirmed that he shares genetics with other Kruger lions, debunking previous speculations that he was a captive-bred escapee.

While the origins of his Mbombela adventure remain uncertain, the genetic results provided valuable insights. According to Kruger spokesperson Isaac Phaahla, many lions in smaller reserves and captive populations also possess Kruger genes. This means his DNA doesn’t necessarily confirm he originated from Kruger, but it reassured conservationists that releasing him into the park wouldn’t disrupt the ecosystem.

The Rescue and Relocation Mission

After being captured at Sekelbos Estate in Mbombela on November 2, the lion spent seven weeks in captivity. His initial release attempt at Mjejane Game Reserve on December 17 didn’t go as planned, leading to a temporary release in Kruger’s Crocodile Bridge section.

Fitted with a satellite tracking collar, SANParks rangers closely monitored his movements. Since his origins were unclear, there were concerns that dominant prides might push him out or that he could introduce diseases to the park. Thankfully, none of these fears materialized.

An Incredible Journey Through Kruger

Upon his release near Crocodile Bridge, the lion lingered in the area, feeding on the carcass of a naturally deceased elephant. He then gradually moved further north to Lower Sabie, where he remained for some time. However, the real surprise came when his tracking collar suddenly signaled movement near Tshokwane—approximately 45km further north.

Curious about this unexpected migration, SANParks immediately dispatched a section ranger to investigate. To their amazement, they discovered that the once-solitary lion had formed a coalition with two male lions and a lioness. This remarkable development suggests they may establish a new territory together.

A Testament to Lion Conservation Efforts

Since his reintegration into Kruger, the lion has traveled nearly 80km north, leading conservationists to believe that he may have originally made his way from Kruger to Mbombela on his own. With the park housing a robust lion population of approximately 1,800, young males often leave their mothers and face dominance challenges from older lions. While it’s unknown if this lion’s journey was part of that natural dispersal, his successful reintegration is a testament to conservation efforts and the resilience of wildlife.

Final Thoughts

This heartwarming story highlights the importance of conservation, cutting-edge tracking technology, and collaboration in preserving Africa’s majestic wildlife. The use of drone technology played a crucial role in tracking and recovering this lion, ensuring he had the best chance of survival in his natural habitat.
