Neglected Dog Covered in 3 Pounds of Matted Fur Gets Life-Changing Makeover

Many stray and neglected dogs suffer from extreme matting, which causes them pain and distress. However, a simple grooming session can completely transform their lives.
That was exactly the case for a 6-year-old dog recently rescued by the South Plains SPCA, who was found in the worst condition they had ever encountered. On July 16, the organization shared a shocking post about the neglected pup, revealing he was covered in thick, severely matted fur, making movement difficult and causing serious health issues.

Worst Case of Dog Neglect
According to the SPCA, the dog had rotting skin spots, fur so tangled it had grown into his skin, and nails over two inches long. Kim Moyers, president of the South Plains SPCA, told KLBK-TV that the dog’s condition was unlike anything she had ever seen:
“His hair growth was about five years of matting. It’s just awful that he was probably seen in different places and overlooked. I’ve never seen anything like him. It was shocking.”

The SPCA named the dog Matt, a fitting name due to his matted fur. Despite his painful condition, rescuers were determined to give him a second chance at life.
A Painful Yet Transformative Makeover
Matt’s matting was so severe that every attempt to cut his hair caused immense pain, forcing the team to sedate him for grooming. Rescuers discovered a leash and collar embedded in his fur, along with thousands of goathead stickers, sticks, grass, and even beetles tangled in his coat.
Once shaved, the team removed a staggering three pounds of fur, which had built up over five years of neglect. Matt was also found to be anemic, requiring medication, but thankfully tested negative for heartworm and tick disease.

A Stunning Transformation

With his painful fur finally gone, Matt underwent an incredible transformation. A professional groomer and SPCA foster worked on him, and when he woke up, he looked like a brand-new dog.

“He is the most gorgeous-looking dog I’ve ever seen. He’s just drop-dead gorgeous,” said rescuer Tori Houston.

For the first time in years, Matt experienced a normal, happy life. He even went on his first walk without his massive fur burden, wagging his tail with excitement.

A Bright Future Ahead

Matt is currently being fostered by Tori Houston and will be placed up for adoption once he has fully recovered. After enduring years of suffering, he is finally on the path to a new and loving home.

His story is a powerful reminder of the impact of animal rescue efforts, and how a little care can completely change a dog’s life
